Making the Best Use of Public Housing
There are 55,000 eligible applicants on the social housing waiting list, with some people waiting for more than ten years to get a house. The waiting list could be more than 86,000 by 2016 unless things change.
Social housing only meets about 44 per cent of need in New South Wales even though we have the largest social housing portfolio in Australia. Social housing falls into three groups. About 80 per cent is public housing which is owned and operated by government. The remaining stock is community housing and Aboriginal housing.

Management of the ClubGRANTS Scheme
The ClubGRANTS scheme gives tax rebates to clubs for supporting their local community. Since 2002, $417 million of ClubGRANTS tax rebates have been given to clubs. The scheme recognises the valuable role played by registered clubs in their local communities. However, the public must have confidence that the scheme is delivering genuine services to the community.

Department of Industry and Investment cannot assure the people of NSW that all royalties owed are being paid in full. This is because it does not have sufficiently robust systems and processes to identify what is owed and to make sure it is paid.

NSW Lotteries Sales Transaction
The Auditor-General of New South Wales, Mr Peter Achterstraat, tabled his review of the Government’s sale of NSW Lotteries. The review was designed to address concerns raised regarding the sale process.
No financial imprudence or waste found Mr Achterstraat found no evidence to indicate that the successful bid was inconsistent with the rules, or that there was waste of public resources or financial imprudence with the Government’s sale of NSW lotteries in early 2010.

To be effective the WWCC has to be thorough. Gaps in the checking process such as employers not checking everyone they should mean that people who may pose a risk to children are not identified. We found that the WWCC does not reliably identify all those who may pose a risk to children. Audit conclusion and recommendations Working With Children Check 3 In addition, we found the Commission does not monitor the compliance of employers, the self-employed or volunteer organisations with their obligations or have a formal strategy to promote awareness of the WWCC.

TAFE NSW: Review of Administration
The Audit Office recognises that TAFE NSW has undergone significant change in the last decade in order to improve service delivery. Whilst the focus of change has been TAFE NSW's core educational role, administration has also benefited. The Quality Management Systems introduced by the Institutes are an example.
The Audit Office is of the opinion that TAFE NSW needs a means by which the efficiency and effectiveness of administrative functions can be assessed notwithstanding initiatives by certain Institutes to introduce monitoring, benchmarking and reporting of administration. In the interests of accountability, TAFE NSW requires the establishment of a common performance reporting framework for administration in each Institute and across Institutes. Along with other key result areas of TAFE NSW’s operations, a reporting framework would better able the TAFE Commission Board (the Board) to inform the Minister for Education, in compliance with the Act, of the efficiency and effectiveness of the administrative functions.
