Findings show that Treasury should review the structure and number of public sector superannuation funds and consider whether efficiencies and cost savings could be achieved through consolidation.

New South Wales’ ten universities recorded a combined operating surplus of $582  million in 2010, similar to last year’s surplus of $494 million.Capital works expenditure increased by 16 per cent from $874 million in 2009 to $1,015 million in 2010. Despite this, financial and reputational issues continue for universities.

The New South Wales public sector superannuation funds’ investments were $42.2 billion at 30 June 2010, up from $38.5 billion in 2009. Investment returns reached 14.5 per cent in 2009-10. This is a significant improvement on the investment returns of up to negative 18.4 per cent at the peak of the global financial crisis in 2008.
