Water security: regional town water infrastructure
Contents

Overview

Safe and secure water is essential to the social and economic health of communities, and to protect our environmental and cultural heritage. The climate in NSW is predicted to become hotter and drier, while our demand for water will grow and change. Ensuring we have right water and sewer infrastructure in regional NSW is therefore critical.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment is the primary regulator and a significant infrastructure funder of local water utilities, which include 88 council-run utility businesses and four local water supply authorities. The audit will assess how effectively the Department has supported the planning and funding of town water infrastructure in regional NSW towns and cities.

We plan to conduct this piece of work as part of a multi-volume series on the theme of water: refer to ‘Water security: water conservation in Greater Sydney – undertaking in 2020’ and ‘Water management and regulation – undertaking from 2020’.
