Under the Local Schools, Local Decisions education reform, an increasing portion of the education budget has been devolved to public schools. As part of this reform, the Department developed a funding model which has core and needs-based elements. These elements are designed to reflect the characteristics of schools and the students within them.
Approximately $1.2 billion in needs-based funding was allocated in 2019 to public schools with students requiring additional support. Schools decide how to use these funds and account for them through the school annual report.
This audit will assess the effectiveness of the Department of Education’s support and oversight of school planning and use of needs-based funding. The audit will focus on:
- the Department’s accountability arrangements to oversee school management of needs-based funding
- support provided to build schools’ capacity in planning for the use of needs-based funding.
